The Office of Clerk began in England around 1272.
The Clerk, or the "Remembrancer" was called to meetings to remind the Councilors of the actions they had taken at the prior meetings.

Non-Maine residents should file in the town in which they intend to be married but may file anywhere in the state.
Anyone wishing to file for a marriage license MUST call the Clerk's Office to make an appointment.
