The Office of Clerk began in England around 1272. 
The Clerk, or the "Remembrancer" was called to meetings to remind the Councilors of the actions they had taken at the prior meetings.

Marriage Licenses will not be processed during the first hour the office is open or one hour before the office closes. 
Please complete the Marriage Intentions (below) prior to arriving at the office.
Non-Maine residents should file in the town in which they intend to be married but may file anywhere in the state.

Anyone wishing to file for a marriage license must call the Clerk's Office to make an appointment.
